The short answer
Published by John Fox, BinDay. Last updated 29 October 2026.
Expanded polystyrene foam needs separate collection for recycling. Some civic amenity centres accept it, so check before travelling. It is different from a rigid polystyrene coffee cup lid, which MyWaste allows in household recycling. Polystyrene packing peanuts go in general waste or can be reused.

Why this answer
MyWaste distinguishes expanded foam from polystyrene that looks like ordinary rigid plastic. Expanded foam is the packaging made of small beads. Ask a civic amenity centre whether it accepts this material separately.
MyWaste directs Styrofoam or polystyrene packing peanuts to general waste or reuse. Its coffee cup lid advice does not mean all expanded foam belongs in the household recycling bin.
What to do
- Check whether the item is expanded foam, packing peanuts or a rigid cup lid.
- For expanded foam, check that a local civic amenity centre accepts it before travelling.
- Reuse polystyrene packing peanuts where possible, or put them in general waste.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not treat expanded foam and a rigid coffee cup lid as the same item.
