My bin wasn't collected: what to do

If your bin wasn't collected, check it was your collection day (bank holidays can change it), the bin was out before your collector's start time, it wasn't tagged for contamination and your account is paid up. Then report the miss to your collector by app, chat or phone, giving your account number, address, bin type and date.

Check my bin day

Before you report it: 5 quick checks

Was it your collection day?

Was the bin out in time?

Was there a tag or sticker on the bin (contamination)?

  • A bin with the wrong items in it may be left behind. Panda, for example, lists contamination as a reason to refuse a collection. (Panda: my bin collection FAQ ↗)
  • Thorntons says that if your brown bin has prohibited items such as plastic, “they cannot empty it and will attach a tag to the bin telling you it was contaminated”. Remove the wrong items before your next collection. (Thorntons: FAQs ↗)
  • City Bin says to call 091 787800 if a contaminated bin was not emptied. (City Bin Co: FAQ ↗)

Could the truck get to it?

How to report a missed bin

Have these ready when you contact your collector:

  • your account number
  • your full address, with Eircode
  • which bin was missed (general waste, recycling or compost/brown)
  • the date of the missed collection
  • whether a tag or sticker was left on the bin

Greyhound asks you to “Include your address and the date of the missed collection” (Greyhound: what to do if my bin wasn’t collected ↗). AES asks you to use the Missed Collections Form on its help page (AES: collection and bin queries ↗). The rest of the list is BinDay’s suggestion.

Report it the same day if you can. None of the collector pages we checked gives a reporting deadline.

If it keeps happening

Keep records

Note the date and bin type each time, take a photo of the bin out with the time shown, keep any tag, and write down each report reference.

Make a written complaint to the collector

MyWaste says “your first point of contact is your service provider’s customer service department” (MyWaste: waste collection guidance ↗). If talking to the business does not fix it, the CCPC suggests you “make a formal complaint in writing” (CCPC: resolve an issue ↗, CCPC: how to complain to a business ↗).

Asking for a credit

You can ask for a credit in your written complaint. The CCPC and MyWaste pages we checked do not set out a refund for missed collections. Greyhound says “a genuinely missed collection due to crew error is collected without additional charge” (Greyhound: missed bin collection Dublin ↗).

Where to escalate

Your local authority

MyWaste says: “If you cannot resolve the dispute with the waste collection firm directly, the next step is to inform your local authority, particularly if you have concerns about the accuracy of your bin weight.” (MyWaste: waste collection guidance ↗). Find your council’s contact details.

CCPC (consumer rights)

MyWaste says that if the dispute is about the terms and agreements of service, you should contact the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (MyWaste: waste collection guidance ↗). The CCPC helpline is (01) 402 5555 and its email is ask@ccpc.ie (CCPC: contact us ↗). It says: “While we cannot engage with businesses on individual cases, we still encourage consumers to report issues to us”, and reports help it decide where to act (CCPC: report a business ↗).

Small claims

The CCPC lists the small claims procedure as the next step if a formal complaint does not resolve it (CCPC: resolve an issue ↗). The Courts Service says: “You can make a claim if the value of your claim is €2,000 or less.” (Courts Service: small claims ↗).

Northern Ireland

nidirect says: “You should also contact your local council if your bin is missed from the normal collection.” (nidirect: bins and waste collection ↗).

Thinking of switching?

If you are weighing up another collector, you can compare collectors on BinDay. Check each collector’s own terms before you sign up.

Missed bin questions

What time do bins have to be out?

It depends on the collector. Greyhound and City Bin start from 6am. Panda collects any time from 6am to 6pm. Mr Binman recommends bins out from 7am on the morning of collection. AES, Thorntons, Oxigen and Clean Ireland advise putting the bin out the night before. Check the table above for yours.

Who do I contact if my bin wasn’t collected?

Your bin collector first. MyWaste says “your first point of contact is your service provider’s customer service department.” Household collection in Ireland is run by private companies. If you cannot resolve it with the collector, MyWaste says the next step is to inform your local authority.

Sources: MyWaste: waste collection guidance ↗

Why was my bin not collected today?

The usual reasons collectors give are: the wrong day or wrong bin, the bin was out too late, contamination, an unpaid balance, or the truck couldn’t get access.

Sources: Mr Binman: FAQ ↗ · AES: collection and bin queries ↗ · Panda: my bin collection FAQ ↗ · Oxigen: why was my bin not collected ↗ · Greyhound: what to do if my bin wasn’t collected ↗

What does a sticker or tag on my bin mean?

Usually that it was contaminated. Thorntons, for example, tags brown bins with the wrong items. Take the wrong items out and put the bin out at your next collection.

Sources: Thorntons: FAQs ↗

Will they come back for a missed bin?

Some collectors say they will. Greyhound says that in most cases it can return to collect your bin within a couple of days. Ask your collector when you report it.

Sources: Greyhound: what to do if my bin wasn’t collected ↗

Can I get a refund for a missed collection?

You can ask for a credit when you make a formal complaint in writing. Greyhound says a genuinely missed collection due to crew error is collected without additional charge. The CCPC and MyWaste pages we checked do not set out a refund for missed collections.

Sources: CCPC: resolve an issue ↗ · Greyhound: missed bin collection Dublin ↗ · MyWaste: waste collection guidance ↗

My green bin is missing. What do I do?

If it wasn’t emptied, report a missed collection. If the bin itself is gone, contact your collector about a replacement. For example, Panda says replacement bins are chargeable at €40 per bin, while AES says it replaces lost, stolen or damaged bins at no extra cost.

Sources: Panda: my bin collection FAQ ↗ · AES: collection and bin queries ↗

Can the CCPC sort out my complaint?

No. The CCPC says it cannot engage with businesses on individual cases, but it encourages consumers to report issues to it. You can contact it on (01) 402 5555 or at ask@ccpc.ie.
