Mulching: what happens to collected trees
- MyWaste: if you choose a cut tree, bring it to a designated Christmas tree recycling point in January, where it will be turned into compost or mulch. Source: MyWaste: a green Christmas
- Local Government Ireland: a real tree brought to a local authority recycling point is usually shredded, and the wood chips are used as mulch or compost, for example in parks. Source: Local Government Ireland: watch out for that tree (5 Jan 2026)
- MyWaste: real Christmas trees can be replanted if bought uncut with the roots still on, or mulched by specialised contractors. Source: MyWaste: real Christmas trees
Artificial trees: what to do
- MyWaste: fake Christmas trees are made of many types of material, which generally makes them unsuitable for recycling. Keep reusing yours. Source: MyWaste: fake Christmas trees
- MyWaste: if you can separate some parts into just plastic, those pieces can go in the recycling bin. When a fake tree is beyond repair, it goes in the general waste bin. Source: MyWaste: fake Christmas trees
- Local Government Ireland: artificial trees are very difficult to recycle, so reuse or donate yours. Some councils are piloting artificial tree recycling (for example, DLR’s Project reTREE). Christmas tree recycling FAQs
Can I put my Christmas tree in the brown bin?
No. MyWaste says trees, tree trunks and large branches should not be placed in the brown bin and should be brought to a civic amenity site instead. Check with your provider before you put any part of a tree out for collection.
Where can I drop off a real tree?
At a council Christmas tree collection point or a civic amenity site. MyWaste says many local authorities arrange special collection points during January each year. No Dublin council had published 2026/27 details when we checked on 27 Oct 2026, so check your council’s website.
Can artificial trees be recycled?
Usually not. MyWaste says fake trees are made of many materials, which generally makes them unsuitable for recycling. Keep reusing yours, put any plastic-only parts you can separate in the recycling bin, and put it in the general waste bin when it is beyond repair.
What does go in the brown bin? See the brown bin guide.
